For my theme I chose design. My plate, my candle holders, my bowls and my mugs are all examples of projects I've made while featuring design.

I focused on designs that created movement and confluence but did not necessarily have a strictly repeating pattern. Creating asymmetrical designs that flow together has been a constant creative process in and of itself.

I created design on my projects by using hand tools and creating both negative and/or positive space by adding or subtracting clay. I would first sketch out my design ideas on paper. Then, when I had thrown a project, I would trace out the design lightly using a pin tool. I would then come back with various tools, depending on the effect/purpose I was going for. By carving all the way through, or part of the way through, I could alter purpose as well as form. I would use glazes top to help accentuate my patterns.

Design helped me to combine my different art forms. Using design, I could apply my sketches and doodles onto my ceramics and see them come from the page into an actual, physical form. I liked using design because it draws the eye-- altering the 3D space created movement beyond just the general form of my projects. The designs themselves have movement within the project, and can create narratives, or alter forms. My designs helped me to create contrast and break up the monotony of simple forms. While still throwing simple shapes I was able to create something new and dynamic that stands out and expresses my artwork on several different levels.

I have projected my 2D concepts onto 3D projects by using design. This has helped me to focus and channel my artistic energy, and it has brought me to create some projects that I'm really proud about. Using design has forced me to think about how my sketches will be effected in space, how to properly highlight them using tools and glazes and still keep the design consistent.

What

For my theme I chose design. I focused on designs that created movement and confluence but did not necessarily have a strictly repeating pattern. Creating asymmetrical designs that flow together has been a constant creative process in and of itself.

How

I created design on my projects by using hand tools and creating both negative and/or positive space by adding or subtracting clay. I would first sketch out my design ideas on paper. Then, when I had thrown a project, I would trace out the design lightly using a pin tool. I would then come back with various tools, depending on the effect/purpose I was going for. By carving all the way through, or part of the way through, I could alter purpose as well as form. I would use glazes top to help accentuate my patterns.

Why

Design helped me to combine my different art forms. Using design, I could apply my sketches and doodles onto my ceramics and see them come from the page into an actual, physical form. I liked using design because it draws the eye-- altering the 3D space created movement beyond just the general form of my projects. The designs themselves have movement within the project, and can create narratives, or alter forms. My designs helped me to create contrast and break up the monotony of simple forms. While still throwing simple shapes I was able to create something new and dynamic that stands out and expresses my artwork on several different levels.
