Ceramics Essay

What

For my theme I chose design. I focused on designs that created movement and confluence but did not necessarily have a strictly repeating pattern. Creating asymmetrical designs that flow together has been a constant creative process in and of itself.

How

I created design on my projects by using hand tools and creating both negative and/or positive space by adding or subtracting clay. I would first sketch out my design ideas on paper. Then, when I had thrown a project, I would trace out the design lightly using a pin tool. I would then come back with various tools, depending on the effect/purpose I was going for. By carving all the way through, or part of the way through, I could alter purpose as well as form. I would use glazes top to help accentuate my patterns.

Why

Design helped me to combine my different art forms. Using design, I could apply my sketches and doodles onto my ceramics and see them come from the page into an actual, physical form. I liked using design because it draws the eye-- altering the 3D space created movement beyond just the general form of my projects. The designs themselves have movement within the project, and can create narratives, or alter forms. My designs helped me to create contrast and break up the monotony of simple forms. While still throwing simple shapes I was able to create something new and dynamic that stands out and expresses my artwork on several different levels.
